Bio

EASTLAND -- Ruby Jo Webb Lewis passed away on Thursday, October 05, 2006, at the Ranger Care Center with both her children at her side. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 8th at the First Baptist Church in Cisco. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation was Saturday evening at Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland. Ruby Jo Pounds was born in Comanche County, Texas near Gorman on September 17, 1912, the daughter of the late Newman and Annie (Skaggs) Pounds. She graduated from Sipe Springs High School at the age of 16, followed by 2 years of conservatory music at John Tarleton College. In 1952, she graduated with a B.S. degree from Hardin Simmons University after having taught school for 20 years. She married Stanley Webb in 1927; he preceded her in death in January, 1966. In October, 1968, she married Earl Lewis, who passed away in 1993. Jo began her teaching career at the tender age of 18 in a one-room school house at Pleasant Hill. Over the next 40 years she taught children to love music as well as Texas history, geography, and world history. She retired from the Cisco Public Schools in 1973. Her gift for playing the piano began at an early age, serving as church pianist by age ten. She organized and participated in many community and school activities over the years, and played for hundreds of weddings and funerals. Her main interest was in gospel music and it was there that she truly left her mark. She taught singing schools throughout Texas and New Mexico, taught piano at the Stamps-Baxter School in Dallas, accompanied various quartets, and played for gospel singings throughout the southern states. She served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Texas State Gospel Singing Convention for several years and was truly an ambassador for that organization. Survivors included a son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Paula Webb of Austin; a daughter and son-in-law, Alice Ann and Ron Holliday of Eastland; four grandchildren, Lori Holliday of Oklahoma City, Barrett Webb of Austin, Matt Holliday and wife, Shana of Lakewood, Colorado and Dennis Webb and wife, Deborah of Dallas; great-granddaughters, Mason Grace and Ruby Kate Holliday; a sister, Pearl Greenwood of New Braunfels. Also surviving were sisters-in-law Adah Webb of Abilene, Katherine Dean of Lubbock, Betty Adams of Cisco and numerous nieces and nephews.
