Louisa Wilson, centurion, died Thursday, June 7, in Friona, at Prairie Acres Nursing home. Louisa Lydia Schlenker was born Sept. 25, 1906, to parents Charles and Amelia Schlenker, near Des Moines, Iowa. When she was two months old her parents and eight brothers and sisters moved to West Texas and homesteaded in the Rhea Community. Louisa graduated from Friona High School and attended Normal College in Canyon. On April 25, 1925, she married Ralph Wilson of O'Donnell. They lived and farmed at Rhea until 1940, when they moved six miles west of Friona. Louisa and Ralph had one child, Mamie Lou. Louisa was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and community leader. She was instrumental in helping Ralph farm and ranch for 69 years. In 1942, she volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader and that was the beginning of 57 happy years working with girls. As a result, the Girl Scout house was named in her honor. Her legacy continues to influence many lives. She was a great cook who passed this joy to her daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her collection of recipes has been enjoyed by many. Louisa was famous for her ability to design and create seed pictures as well as other arts and crafts. She found great pleasure in quilting, and her hand decorated Christmas cookies were masterpieces. She enjoyed sharing her artisanship with others. She received the Woman of Year Award in 1960 and Woman of Distinction Award in 1999. Louisa was a member of the Union Congregational Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters and five brothers; and her husband, Ralph. Survivors include her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Mamie Lou and Louis Welch; her grandchildren, Jan Welch Bogard, Gay Welch Jucha, Holly Welch Easley, and Ralph Lynn Welch; great grandchildren, Mende Moore, Melanie Scott, Brandon Petree, Logan Bingham, Blaire Herring, and Hayes Jones; eight great great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Potts. Louisa lived a long and productive life and will be missed by all who knew her, especially her family. As requested by Louisa Wilson, there will be no services. The family suggests memorials be made to your favorite charity. Arrangements are by Blackwell Funeral Home of Friona.
