Evelyn Doris Oates, 84, of Frisco, Texas, passed away on March 20, 2016, from stroke complications. Visitation will be at 12 noon, one hour prior to the service at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Grace Community Church, 1021 Campbell Road, Houston, with Reverend John Kanter officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston. Evelyn was born in Daisetta, Texas, to the late Lincoln Bismark and Viola Pearl (Brady) McMillen. She was a registered nurse and worked most of her life in the operating room at Shriner’s Hospital, Kerrville; East Texas Medical Center, Tyler; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Park Pavilion, and Hermann Hospital in Houston. Even after moving to Tyler, Evelyn drove to Houston to work at Hermann for two-week stints. It is fair to say that nursing was her calling. She also loved dolls and was a member of the Doll Collectors of Houston Doll Club and the Tyler Doll Club. Evelyn was a member of the Newcomer’s Club and an Antique Group in Tyler. She enjoyed working in her yard wherever she lived and was a member of the Garden Club in Houston. Evelyn was a loving, generous, and loyal friend, wife, and mother. She loved animals and people. She had a great sense of humor and a wonderful laugh. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Richard Ashford, following husbands, Gene Fordyce, and Calvin Oates; and brothers, John R. McMillen and Floyd McMillen. Survivors include her daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Lee Ashford Warnock and her husband, Hugh, of Frisco; brother, George McMillen and his wife, Eloise, of Woodville; cousin, Glenda Rose Weaver, of Houston; and several nieces, nephews, and other cousins.
