Wanda Ann Sikes was born September 3, 1929 to Buford and Lucy Elton Hughes in Quanah, Texas. The family moved to Friona, where Wanda went through grade school and high school. She moved to Lubbock, Texas, where she enrolled in Draughn’s Business College in the fall of 1947. Upon graduating from Draughn’s, she got a job as a secretary in the Agronomy Department at Texas Tech. It was there that she met her husband-to-be, James K. Sikes. They were married on October 14, 1950. Together they raised two daughters, Cindy Furlow (Tommy), of Gainesville, Georgia and Tina Gonzales (Andy), of Englewood, Colorado. Wanda was employed by Paymaster, Plains Laboratory, and West Texas home Health Agency. Wanda loved gardening, and at one time was president of a garden club in Lubbock. She was a Girl Scout leader for five years. She enjoyed traveling with the family, playing tennis, and was an avid Texas Tech sports fan. Wanda is predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Muriel, Fay and Opal; and one brother, Roy, who was killed in action during World War II. She is survived by four grandchildren, Jeremiah Scheer (Kasie) of Soldotna, Alaska, Kristen Ivy (Matt) of Cumming, Georgia, Lindsey (Trevor) of Amarillo, Lauren Terrell (Clete) of Cumming, Georgia; and seven great-grandchildren, Heinrich Scheer, Eden White, Sawyer Ivy, Hensley Ivy, Asher White, Ellary Terrell, and Raleigh Ivy. She is preceded in death by one son, James Roy, and one great-granddaughter, Celeste Terrell. Wanda was a dedicated Christian. For years she taught children’s Sunday School classes at the Broadway Church of Christ. She attended Ladies’ Wednesday morning Bible class, and was a charter member and twenty-one year participant of Community Bible Study. She loved God with all her heart, and taught her daughters about Him, and about the meaning of love and faithfulness. She served God for years, and now rests with Him in eternity.
