He had one sister, Eleanor. The family moved from the Stanton area to a farmstead southeast of Chambers. Gerald attended country school near Chambers then attended high school at St. Mary's in O'Neill. After high school, Gerald was drafted into the United States Army in 1953, serving in Germany during the Korean War until being honorably discharged in 1955. After his service in the Army, Gerald returned to Nebraska and worked as a ranch hand in the Bartlett area. In 1957, he went to Milford Trade School and became a diesel mechanic. He was married to Alice (Frerichs) on June 4, 1960, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill. They made their home in Stuart where Gerald worked at a repair shop until they moved to Bassett where he worked for Ted Blake Implement. Due to a job-related back injury, Gerald required surgery. It was during this time that Gerald and Alice and their growing family moved north of O'Neill where Alice returned to teaching to support the family while Gerald recovered from his surgery and took care of the kids. They lived there for two years then moved to Stuart where Alice continued teaching and Gerald was employed at Shelhamer Equipment in O'Neill. It was in the mid-1970's that Gerald started his own business in Stuart and the family moved into Stuart, where Alice still lives. Gerald was a proud member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, the American Legion, a Fourth Degree KC, Knights of Columbus and a volunteer fireman. He enjoyed gardening and was known around town for the huge garden that he and the family grew and preserved. Other interests included fishing, his pets, playing cards and enjoying his family. He always took pride in the accomplishments of his children and especially his grandchildren. Gerald is survived by his wife, Alice of Stuart; seven children, Randy (Jacque) Fahrenholz of O'Neill, Marsha (Rusty) Osburn of Cody, Cheryl (Mike) Rentschler of Atkinson, Carl (Theresa) Fahrenholz of Stuart, Linda Ramold of Norfolk, Jerry (Paulette) Fahrenholz of Stuart, Nancy (Mike) Kratz of Atkinson; 26 grandkids and 12 great-grandkids; and sister, Jean Truman of O'Neill.
