Bio

Richard L. "Dick" Knebel, 84, passed away on March 12, 2016. He was born on June 21, 1931 in Hillje, Texas to Anton and Mary (Bacak) Knebel. On February 8, 1958, he married Anna Bell Doehring in Flatonia, Texas. His love for life, his country, his family, and his faith were his highest priorities. Among his many likes, including hunting and fishing, was his love of choral singing. At the age of 15, he started singing in the St. Andrews Church Choir, the El Campo High School Choral Club and then the Wharton Jr. College Choir. In 1958, Our Lady of Victory Church was established and he joined the first adult choir and continued to be a member until 2006. In the late 50's and 60's, his true passion of singing continued while he sang the lead in a barbershop quartet. Richard was a member of Our Lady of Victory Cathedral, Knights of Columbus #1329, V.F.W. Chapter 4146, and the Korean War Veterans Chapter. In 1950, he started working for DuPont Construction. In 1952, he entered the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in April 1955. He acquired the rank of Sergeant (T), received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Medal and Army Good Conduct Medal. After being discharged, his career began at Union Carbide where he worked for 30 years until retirement in 1985. Richard was a loving, caring, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and a loyal friend to all of those who knew him. He will be greatly missed and forever loved by his family. He was considered a role model by many, especially his children and grandchildren. His wisdom touched many and his witty humor radiated always. He proudly showed his patriotism for his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers (Fred and Larry); and twin sons, James and Robert. Services will be held at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral, Wednesday, March 16, 2016 with a visitation from 9:00 to 9:30 am and a rosary to be recited at 9:30 am, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am with Rev. Kristopher Fuchs officiating. Burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. Military Honors will be held under the auspices of the Victoria County Veterans Council.
