J.W Echols was the Oldest Born Son Of John Thomas Echols and Lydia Clemmons Hendricks Echols. He was born in 1861 at Mantua in Collin County. In 1878 His parents and brothers and J.W moved to the just starting out town of Van alstyne in Grayson County Texas. In about 1881-1884 Echols moved to San Angelo, in 1888 he was made County Tax assessor, he later became Deputy Sherriff as well. In January of 1890 his young life would come to a head when Him and a Local Harness and Saddle dealer named John Geiger got into an affray. John Geiger drew his Pistol and shot Echols in the abdomen. Echols also mortally wounded Geiger by shooting him through both lungs. J.W Echols was a Knights of Phytias member, an Odd Fellow as well as a fireman. His funeral was one of the Biggest seen. Present at his funeral was his father J.T Echols and a number of Important members. John Geiger died three years to the day in 1893.
