Probate Court records of November 12, 1884 record A W Davis stating the Benjamin L. Davis is his son and he is six years old and entitled to receive $74.24 from the estate of James Nelson. James Nelson was his deceased grandfather, father of his mother, Nancy Caroline Nelson Davis. Nancy would be the heir that was entitled to this inheritance from her father if she were still alive. Nancy died sometime between 1882 and 1884. The $74.24 is the amount of each share that James Nelson's children received from his estate at one of the disbursements. In the 1880 census, there are three children listed for Anderson Wiley Davis and Nancy Caroline Nelson Davis: William, B L, and Eliza. BL and Eliza were both one year old at the time. Since William and Eliza are not mentioned in the probate, nor did A W Davis file as guardian of either of them, it is assumed they both are deceased as well as their mother by 1884.
