Bio

Loree Marie (Polansky) Rost was born on June 1, 1927 in Dime Box, Texas to Julius Anton Polansky and Clara Winnie (Kocurek) Polansky. She graduated from Dime Box High School in 1943, as the salutatorian of her class. Graduating from the University of Texas in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree, she was one of the first six girls allowed in the Texas Longhorn Band. Loree was a buyer at Foley's Department Store in Houston before marrying O'Barr W. Rost on December 1, 1951 in Dime Box. Together they ran Rost Cafe in Giddings for 15 years. They were married for 46 years until his death in 1998. She received a Master of Education degree from Texas A & M University in 1976 and taught 6th grade English and Spelling at Giddings Middle School. She was the first teacher from Giddings I.S.D. to be nominated for Texas Teacher of the Year in 1988 and retired from teaching in 1991. Mrs. Rost was a faithful member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church and served as volunteer organist there for 43 years. She also organized and directed the children's church choir. She was an active citizen in the Giddings community and served as a charter member of the Library Board. She also volunteered her time helping at the library for almost 40 years. Loree wrote the Library News article for the local newspaper for over 36 years and was proud to have personally raised $10,000 in donations for the library building project. Her civic involvement was recognized in 2008, when she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Giddings Chamber of Commerce. Loree enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends and was well known for taking food to the sick, shut-ins and elderly in the community. She also loved reading, watching sports and playing golf and tennis. The last year of her life, Loree was professionally and lovingly cared for by Rebecca Spacek Langley and her staff at Bec's Blessing in Giddings. It was there that she passed away the afternoon of Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Mrs. Rost was preceded in death by her parents, Julius & Clara Polansky; her husband, O'Barr Rost; her brother, Clinton Polansky and her sister, Lynn Garrett. Loree is survived by her children, Helen Claire Rost of Weimar, Paul David Rost of San Antonio, Carl Stephen Rost and wife, Connie of Giddings and Mari Loree Tucker and husband, Mark of San Marcos; one sister, Geraldine Laier of Austin; six grandsons, Benjamin Rost of San Antonio, Weston Rost of Corpus Christi, Mathew Rost and Sarah Lyle of San Antonio, Tyler Budde of San Marcos, Carson Rost of Portland, and Justin Rost of San Antonio; one great granddaughter, Lily Ann Rost of San Antonio, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Giddings with Father James Olnhausen officiating. Burial will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation and a prayer service will be held. Serving as pallbearers will be Benjamin Rost, Weston Rost, Matthew Rost, Tyler Budde, Carson Rost and Justin Rost. Honorary pallbearers will be Louis Muniz, Louis Gaeke, David Varnado, Ricky Wahrmund and Clarence Buck. Memorials may be made to the St. Margaret's Catholic Church Building Fund, the Giddings Public Library Memorial Fund or to the charity of one's choice. (Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home)
