Funeral services for Mr. Richard Varva, age 68, of Norman will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 South University Boulevard in Norman with Reverend Randy Wade officiating. Richard was born October 19, 1942 in Anadarko, Oklahoma the son of Joe Frank and Gladys (Clopton) Varva. He passed away Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Oklahoma City after a lengthy illness. Richard attended Anadarko Public Schools, graduating from Anadarko High School in 1960. He attended college at OU before being united in marriage to Ms. Vanda Barrett on July 11, 1964 in Anadarko. Richard and Vanda made their home in Anadarko and Chickasha, Oklahoma before moving to Norman, Oklahoma in 1966. Richard was employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 31 years, retiring in 1990. After his retirement from Southwestern Bell, he began working with the Target in Norman, remaining with them for the next 10 years. Richard was a quiet man who didn't say much, but was quick to act when necessary. His good , solid judgment was a trait others noticed and they often approached him for wisdom and advice. Richard enjoyed a close relationship with his high schools friends, especially his high school baseball team. They enjoyed class reunions and reminiscing of their high schools days and were especially proud of winning the State Championship in baseball in 1960. He was an avid outdoors man, enjoying fishing and was a proud recipient of the Eagle Scout Award, the highest advanced ranking within the Boy Scouts. Of all his accomplishments and awards, Richard was most humbled to be a great Husband, Dad, and PaPa. His children would often refer to him as their “Superman” Dad because of his awesome love and support he continued to give to them until God called him home. His incredible strength and perseverance will never be forgotten. As a PaPa, Richard was credited to being called the “World's Best.” His tender love and the twinkle in his eye were unmistakeable when he was with his grandchildren. The laughter and fun times he shared with them will be forever remembered and cherished. He was truly a Hero in their eyes. Richard was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Vanda of the home; two sons; Chris Varva of Oxford, Mississippi; Joe Varva and his wife, Kristy of Norman; one daughter, Teresa Damm and her husband, Dennis of Moore, OK; five grandchildren; Whitney Lee Damm and her fiancee', Alexander Hewitt, Spencer Damm, Brian Varva, Katie Varva, and Aubrey Grace Varva; three brothers; Joe Varva of Crescent City, CA, Gordon “Buddy” Varva of Chickasha, OK, and Frank Varva and his wife, Janis of Newalla, OK; one sister, Mary Ann Vinyard and her husband, Joe of Chickasha, OK; and a host of additional family and numerous friends.
