BURWELL — Lareda Cronk Penas Hoback, 81, of Burwell died Jan. 13, 2016. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at St. John Lutheran Church in Burwell. The oldest of five children, Lareda was born July 19, 1934, to Walter and Verna (Anderson) Cronk on the family farm northeast of Ord in Valley County. She attended District 13 Plain Valley Country Grade School through eighth grade, attending Ord Public Schools and graduating in 1952. While attending high school, she lived in town and worked for Dr. Osentowski for room and board while taking care of his children and household chores, later working as a Dental Assistant for the doctor. She was married to Robert Penas on May 12, 1954, and to this union two children were born, Harold and Carole. During this marriage, Robert built himself, and owned and operated the Burwell bowling alley, Hi Scores Lanes. They also farmed west of Burwell. After that they moved to Grand Island and in her early 30s, Lareda attended Nursing School and became an LPN, working for 25 years at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island. This is what prompted her to give her body to the Medical Center in Omaha for medical research. After the death of Robert, she met and married Kenneth Hoback on May 24, 1998. After they built their dream dome home, she enjoyed having The Autumn Leaf Bed and Breakfast with husband, Ken, in Burwell. In later years, Lareda spent many hours volunteering for the Loup Rivers Scenic Byway and was instrumental in organizing the startup of the Nebraska Junk Jaunt. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Hoback of Burwell; son, Harold (Peggy) Penas of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Carole (Kirk) Miller of San Jose, Calif.; granddaughter, Sarah Miller; sister, Lenabelle Rowse of Grand Island; brothers, Willis (Darcy) Cronk and Rolland (Marlene) Cronk, both of Ord; Uncle Millard (Fern) Anderson of Idaho; and many nephews, nieces and cousins around the country and in Canada. Lareda was loved by all who crossed her path in life. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Susan; and her first husband, Robert Penas.
