Mary Theresa Zaskoda Melanson passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, in Fort Worth. Though we are often reminded to value quality over quantity, Mary's days were blessed with both -- a gratifying life well lived and enjoyed by countless number of extended relatives and friends who appreciated her cheerful nature and feisty spirit. Mary was born in the small South Texas town of Louise on Aug. 8, 1923, and soon understood the importance of a supportive family. After the death of her mother at age 17, Mary and her siblings bound together to raise one another. She relocated from South Texas to Fort Worth, where she eventually met and married her husband, Joe, who served in the U.S. Air Force. The couple moved to Maine while Joe was stationed there, later returning to Fort Worth, where they raised their own family. Before stepping in to her position as the matriarch of the Melanson family, Mary worked at St. Joseph's Hospital, Williamson-Dickie and Convair. Following employment outside the home, she transitioned into the role that she excelled at most -- that of caregiver -- and stayed home to run the Melanson household. Mary was a vibrant and selfless woman who was passionate about her Catholic faith. She loved dancing with her husband, the energetic beat of polka music, family card games and assembling jigsaw puzzles with a daunting number of pieces. She also loved "The Price is Right" and "Wheel of Fortune," but most of all loved her family. She was well-known for her enthusiastic rendition of the Chicken Dance, her mouth-watering spaghetti and meatballs, and her knack for getting a card (decorated with stickers) into the mail on just the right day so as to arrive in the hands of its recipient on his or her birthday, regardless of the distance it traveled. The family would like to thank the staff of The Courtyards Rehab of Fort Worth, Texas Health Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital and Community Hospice of Texas. The kindness and compassion demonstrated by these healthcare professionals was similar to the way Mary cared for so many others through her lifetime. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Frances Zaskoda; 12 siblings; and one granddaughter. Survivors: She is remembered and loved by her husband of 62 years, Joe; sister, Lucy Quinones; sister-in-law, Toni Zaskoda; brother-in-law, Clarence Cormier; children and their spouses, Gerard and Susan Melanson, James and Sandra Melanson, Alan Melanson, Wayne and Janice Krucky, Tommy and Maureen Beck, Mark and Donna Ashbrook, Doug and Kathy Smithhart, and Patty Ferguson; She is also remembered and loved by her 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, and will live on in the stories told to her two great-grandchildren not yet born.
