Caroline (Lina) Josephine Schaefer was born 12 April 1861 in Manhattan to Maximilian and Ernestina (Mathesius) Schaefer. The daughter of German immigrants, she married Frederick Charles Heppenheimer on 12 Apr 1882 in Manhattan. They had 3 children: Frederick Maximilian, Emily W and Rudolph Ernst. Her husband was a doctor. In the mid 1890's, after some research, he changed his name from "Heppenheimer" to "Heppenheim vom Saal". Lina and the children took the surname "vom Saal".
