Born and raised in Nebraska, John came to Oregon after WWII to begin a career in construction. John's first wife was Imogene Ankney of Atkinson, NE. A daughter, Ginny Lee, came forth on May 1, 1947. The marriage was brief. Imogene died of a brain tumor in 1949. His next marriage was also short-lived (8 years) to Freida Lawson, a woman who had six children from a previous husband. One son, Bruce Alvin Thompson, was born in 1951. John worked for Avondale Costruction Co from 1945 to ~1960. He spent several years working between Portland and Hood River where he founded the Hood River Construction Company. He loved boating and fishing, especially the Deschutes and Columbia rivers, and always kept a nice motor boat ready for his time off. In 1960, he met and married Esther Jacoby and made his residence at her NE Portland home for several more years. The children from each previous marriage grew, married and moved on. Bruce joined the Army and went to Vietnam. The Thompsons moved to Hood River. John's alcoholism increased and caused his marriage to come to an end. Esther returned to her NE Portland home while John remained in Hood River. John married Pearl. After he retired, he made his home in Madras, Oregon where he lived out his final days.
