Bio

Edward H. “Ed” Becker, 88, lifelong resident of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First-Faith United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Trudy Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery, with military honors rendered by the Grand Island Veterans Honor Guard. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Ed was born March 15, 1927, in Grand Island to Henry Becker and Irene (Gulzow) Becker. He grew up in Grand Island and Fullerton. Upon graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1945, he entered the United States Army. He served in Germany, and was honorably discharged in November of 1946 as a sergeant. When Ed returned to Grand Island, he attended Grand Island Business College. He began his career at Bish Machinery and worked at Whetstone Motors and Becton Dickinson. He spent the majority of his career employed by Mason & Hanger at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, finishing as fiscal manager. He retired when the plant closed in 1990. It was at CAAP where he met his future wife, Betty Graus. They were married on Jan. 19, 1957. They raised their three children, Dave, Don and Chris, in Grand Island. Ed was a charter member, and for many years the financial treasurer, at First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post 0053. He was a kind and gentle man with a positive outlook. His family will always remember him as devoted caregiver to Betty during her long struggle with multiple sclerosis until she passed away on Nov. 17, 2001. His hobbies included camping, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. He also was an avid reader and loved solving crossword puzzles. Survivors include his children, David (Lucy) Becker of Rochester, Minn., Donald (Mandy) Becker of Omaha and Christine (Robert) Schropfer of Ohiowa; three beloved granddaughters, Marie (Ryan) Robinson, Sarah Becker and Kimberly Schropfer; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Graus of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; a sister, Lillian (Elvin) Davis; brothers-in-law, Ed (Lil), Frank (Lottie), Pete, Henry (Clara), Bennie (Lucille) and Laverne (Joyce) Graus; and sisters-in-law, Isabelle (Doug) Nielsen and Kathryn Cochenour.
