Son of George Washington Runyan of Indiana and Medora Harriet Amsberry of Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa. Husband of Grace Cordelia Duke of Mason City, Custer County, Nebraska; married on 26 November 1913 in BrokenBow, Custer County, Nebraska. Merle Mason Runyan attended Grand Island Baptist College and studied law under N. Dwight Fort, a Mason City attorney. He was admitted to the Nebraska Bar in 1915 and was appointed Deputy Clerk of Custer County and in 1918 Deputy Clerk of the District Court. From 1917-1940, he was a partner in the firm of Schaper & Runyan in Broken Bow. He assisted in the organization of the Broken Bow Building & Loan Association. In 1939 he was President of the Custer County, Nebraska Bar Association.
