The sad news reached here Tuesday morning of the sudden death of Mrs. Asa R. Thomas at her home on Straight Mountain Monday afternoon. The report is that she was in apparent good health and was attending to her household duties when a sudden stroke of heart failure ended her earthly existence. She was about 35 years of age and leaves a husband and a host of relatives and friends to morn their loss. [Southern Democrat, October 21, 1909] Obituary Viola Thomas was born February 11th, 1877, and died October 18, 1909. She was converted and joined the M. E. church in early childhood, and was a member of the church who loved its doctrines. She professed the experience of holiness in July 1902. Well do I remember looking upon her upturned face as she earnestly plead for the God of peace to sanctify her wholly. On December 19th, 1895, she was married to Asa R. Thomas. Their home has been blessed with four precious children, to whom she was lovingly devoted. Her death came unexpectedly but she had heeded the Bible injunction, "Be ye also ready for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh." She was the daughter of Rev. W. J. Wilemon of the Alabama Conference. She was loved by all, is universally morned by all in the community where she lived. She was patient in her afflictions, cheerful in the face of disappointment, happy and sunshiny under all circumustances of life; a spiritual uplift to everyone who chanced to meet her. Her presence, prayers and testimonies were an inspiration to every assembly she was in. Yes she will be missed, but her influence will linger long in the hearts of all who knew her. May the Lord bless and comfort the hearts of her husband, children, parents, brothers and sisters 'till they meet her in heaven. J. B. Ellis. [Southern Democrat, October 28, 1909]
