Richard Adonis "Jim" Palmer June 15, 1916 — Aug. 24, 2006 Richard Adonis "Jim" Palmer, 90, passed away at his home in Kirtland Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, approximately one mile from the home where he was born. He was born June 15, 1916, in Kirtland to Asael Earnest Palmer and Lois Foutz Palmer. He was the second of seven children. He lived for a short time in Red Mesa, Colo., and then his family moved to Sweetwater, Ariz., where he helped his dad operate a trading post. His dad bought farm land in Kirtland and Jim farmed with his dad until he eventual bought the farm from him. He went to San Diego, Calif., in 1941 to Welder's School. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy and spent most of his time, until 1945, at a submarine repair base in Pearl Harbor. Following World War II, he came back to Kirtland and spent the rest of his life dairy farming. He married Margie Christensen Rhudy in 1948. She passed away in 1975. He then married Jessie Clouse Brown in 1977. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Margie; his step-son, Johnny Rhudy; daughter-in-law, Kelly; three sisters, June, Emma Lou, and Jessie; and his brother, Bill. He is survived by his wife, Jessie; his sons, Jimmy of Kirtland, Mark and wife, Janet, of Kirtland, Scott and wife, Christina, of Kirtland; daughters, Marla Smaka and husband, Jeffrey, of Kirtland, and Maridee Hunter and husband, Boyd, of Albuquerque. He also was survived by 23 grandchildren and two sisters, Estella Porterfield of Kirtland and Ellora Spencer of Grants. Funeral services for Richard will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located on No. 10 County Road 6523 off Highway 64 in Kirtland. Bishop Korth Ellsworth will officiate. Viewing will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at the Church. Interment will be at the Kirtland Cemetery.
