Bio

Deward (Dewey) Lee Dostal was born May 14, 1927 to Gus and Olga (Lapour) Dostal at Dallas, South Dakota. He was the eldest of two children born to Gus and Olga. Deward and his younger brother, Laverne Kenneth (Mush), grew up on the family ranch near the old Carlock townsite. Deward started his school career at the old country school south of Carlock, and finished high school in Gregory. He took one year off during high school to help with the war effort by picking corn, and completed high school a year late. He was drafted into service in 1946, and was sent to post World War II Japan, where he helped with the peace keeping effort. Upon returning home, Deward went to work in Topeka Kansas for his uncle Emil Dostal as a mechanic's assistant. He returned to the Gregory area after five years, when he met Marie York through her sister, Maxine. He married Marie in 1953, and they lived in the Gregory area for two months before returning to Topeka. Following the birth of their son David in 1955, the family moved to Northome, Minnesota, where a daughter, Helen was born in 1958. Edward was born in Gregory in the winter of 1960, and the family returned to Minnesota for a brief time before moving to Valentine, Nebraska, where Deward helped construct the Merritt Irrigation Project. The family once again returned to the Gregory area, prior to the birth of their son Daniel. Deward helped with the construction of Highway 44, and the family moved onto the place north of Burke, where twins Richard and Alec were born. Deward and Marie raised feeder calves and supervised the running of the family ranch near Carlock after the death of his parents, Olga and Gus. Deward died April 6, 2015 in Sioux Falls, SD. Deward was preceded in death by his parents, Olga and Gus, his brother Laverne Dostal, grandson Steven, and twin great grandsons Ray and Trenton.
