LAWRENCE, Kan. — James Flynn, 83, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Schuyler, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, at the Lawrence, Kansas, hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at Divine Mercy Parish, St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, in Schuyler with the Rev. Andrew Syring as celebrant. Committal was in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. James Henry Flynn Jr. was born to James H. (Harry) Flynn Sr. and June (Binder) Flynn in Schuyler on Sept. 27, 1932. He graduated from Schuyler High School in 1950, and briefly attended Hastings College before enlisting in the Navy in 1951. He served in the Korean conflict, however, soon after his enlistment he was assigned to special services playing baseball and basketball in the Hawaiian Islands for the remaining part of his four years. He enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln immediately after his naval service. He graduated from UNL with his bachelor's degree and played baseball for Nebraska. Jim married Marian Shonka on June 22, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was involved in agribusiness, Knights of Columbus, activities and sporting events of his children while in Schuyler. He and his wife Marian moved to Lawrence, Kansas, in 1995. He was active in the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center during this time. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marian (Shonka) Flynn; daughters, Kathy Flynn and husband Gary Dunteman and Julie Flynn of Omaha; son, John Flynn and wife Lucy of Lawrence, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Sandra Flynn of New York; brother, Maurice and wife Anita of Schuyler; sister, Mary (Flynn) English and husband Webb of Omaha; sisters-in-law, Marlene (Jack) Flynn of San Diego and Beth (Mick) Flynn of Omaha; grandchildren, James C. Flynn, Courtney Wachal, Breann Frana, Nealy Neukrich and Jack, Kate, Matthew and Molly Flynn; great-grandchildren, Maddux, Leighton and Bryson Neukrich and Paxton and Greyson Frana; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sons, James H. Flynn III and Patrick J. Flynn; parents, James Sr. and June (Binder) Flynn; and brothers, John F. (Jack) Flynn and Michael J. (Mick) Flynn.
