Bio

Mrs. Flora Mae Smith , age 88 of Carthage, TN – formerly of Marion County, Indiana, and Guin, Alabama – died peacefully Sunday, December 19, 2010, in the Smith County Health Care Center in Carthage, where she had made her home for the past five years. Mrs. Miles was born on June 30, 1922, one of seven children, and raised in Marion Co. by her parents, Oscar Henry Smith and Luella (Holliman) Smith. She married Donald Miles, her husband of almost 58 years, on April 12, 1940; he preceded her in death on March 20, 1998. In 1952, after having four children, they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she worked for Wayne Candies for over 25 years. Some of her most lasting friendships were people she met at that workplace and was still in contact with many of them until a few weeks before she died. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her eldest son, Donald Wayne Miles; two sisters, Mary Ellen Chapman and Jennie Lee Lyons; and two brothers, Leon and Lester Smith. She loved getting together with friends and family for holiday gatherings, or large picnics where she played baseball or softball. She was 5'9" tall and played basketball in school when they still had a half court game because women were too weak and fragile to play full court. She loved to play games, dominoes and Chinese checkers. She was an avid collector of carnival glass, coins, stamps and baseball cards. Mrs. Flora attended church her whole life and after moving back to Winfield in 1979, she became a member of Winfield Free Will Baptist Church. It was the highlight of her week to go to Sunday school and Church every Sunday. She loved her church, church friends and family, and her Pastor. In the last few years she was quite debilitated by severe osteoporosis, which limited her daily activities and exacerbated other health conditions. But she still loved to have all the children and grandchildren visit. She still loved to have a holiday party when possible and she attended church until she just couldn't manage it physically anymore. She loved to laugh, to tell a good story, and she was not one to give up easily. Survivors include one daughter, Lee Huddleston and her husband, Jim, of Elmwood, TN; two sons, Joe Arnold Miles and his wife, Nancy of Canyon Lake, TX, and Eldon Miles and his wife, Sandy of Ft. Wayne, IN; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Miles of Indianapolis, IN; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Kirchhofer and her husband, Willard of Winfield; one brother, Ira Smith and his wife, Peggy of Winfield; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Danny and Barrett Miles and Kim Woods, all of Charleston, SC, Tom Miles of Denver, CO, Mike and Lee Miles of Ft. Wayne, IN, Matthew Miles of Whitehouse, TN and Brian Huddleston of Elmwood, TN. Services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Winfield Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Winfield City Cemetery, with Miles Funeral Home of Winfield directing.
