PEKIN ~ O'TTillie "Tillie" Pauline Smith, 90, of 1260D Florence Avenue passed away at 2:03 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at Pekin Manor. Born May 30, 1915 in Selby, South Dakota to Henry and Christina Schaak Scherer, she married Oran C. Upchurch on November 22, 1937. He died March 22, 1978 in Peoria. She then married Cleo Smith on February 14, 1985. He died July 20, 1990 in Evansville, Indiana. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Surviving are one son, Ron (V. Hermene) Upchurch of Pekin; one daughter, Sharon L. Barding of Pekin; six grandchildren, Darren Upchurch and Noelle Upchurch, both of Pekin, Heather Upchurch of Burr Ridge, Rene (Tim) Courter of Galesburg, Michael (Esmeralda) Murphy in Germany, and Rhonda (Arl) Snyder of Manito; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ernestine Bishop in California and one brother, Henry Scherer, Sr. Mrs. Smith worked in the maintenance department at Pekin Insurance Company for 10 years, retiring in 1980. Previously, she had been a cook at the Southland Barbeque in Pekin and the Dutch Grill in South Pekin. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin. She loved to sew, work crossword puzzles, travel and play pinochle. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 26, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. Rodger P. Abatie and Vicar Al Majewski will officiate. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Memorial contributions may be made to her church or Harbor Light Hospice, 2000 West Pioneer Parkway, Suite 18B, Peoria, IL 61615. Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.
