Two Children: LaVonna Joan Prochaska (1929-1951) and Donald Francis Prochaska (1933-2004) The Beatrice Daily Sun newspaper, Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska, USA. Sunday, June 17, 1951, Page 1. NORTH BEND, Neb. UP—Four members of a fishing party died in a pre-dawn crash today when a fast-moving passenger train hit their car during a heavy fog. The victims, all of Omaha, were: Melvin Krepel, 23, apparently the driver of the car. His wife LaVonne about 21. Frank Krepel, 21, Melvin’s brother. Mrs. Clara Prochaska, 43, LaVonne’s mother. The Union Pacific’s eastbound Los Angeles limited, traveling about 75 miles an hour, hit the car at the private crossing about half a mile east of North Bend 40 miles west of Omaha. Fishing equipment, bodies and wreckage of the car were scattered over a 300 foot area. The car had turned off the main highway and was moving across the track on a crossing leading to the Platte river where the group apparently planned to fish. Acting Dodge County Attorney W.G. Line said he was told by Engineer C.W. Oshlo that the train crew realized the train had struck something, but after stopping, were unable to determine what it was because of the dense fog and darkness. Dodge County Sheriff Pelham McGee said that by the time he arrived an hour after the crash visibility was only about 100 feet. Oshlo, the engineer, told the county attorney that when the train stopped, he noted plates, a camp skillet and broken glass. The crew then went back along the right of way for about one half mile, but couldn’t see the car because of the darkness and heavy fog. After a delay of about an hour, the train crew proceeded into Fremont where officials were called. Line said that the bodies were thrown for some distance, one of them breaking down a barbed wire fence. Omaha World-Herald newspaper, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA.
