***DIRECT MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT (See notes below)*** Leslie Arthur Garfield Brown was born to William Ellis Brown and Maria R. Brown on 3 Sep 1880 in Nemaha, Nebraska. Sadly when he was just 10 years old his father, William Ellis Brown (AKA "Ellis Brown), who suffered from injuries from the Civil War and from having been a POW for 9 months at Camp Sumter, Andersonville, GA passed away. Leslie was the youngest child in the family. Leslie A. Brown resided in Lincoln, NE for 25 years and all of his siblings eventually moved to Lincoln, NE. On 18 June 1941 at age 60 Leslie married Mrs. Frieda Debus, also of Lincoln, Nebraska. Frieda Dubus at the time of their marriage was a 41 year old widow who had 3 children of her own, Eileen age 17, Dorothy, age 11 and Gladys, age 7. Leslie was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and at age 64 he passed away, being survived by his wife and his sister, Mrs. Zelma Minard. As reported on page 9 of Mon, 18 Dec 1944 edition of "The Nebraska State Journal" Leslie's funeral was held on Monday, 25 1944 at St. Mary's Cathedral with Msgr. C. J. Riordan officiating. Leslie was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park. *********************************************************** Leslie A. Brown was a direct descendant to 7 Mayflower passengers through his father, William Ellis Brown and mother, Maria R. Brown's, lineages (William Ellis & Maria R. Brown were 1st cousins). His Mayflower ancestors included John Howland and his wife, Elizabeth Tilley, Elizabeth's parent's John Tilley and Joan Hurst Tilley who both perished the first winter in the New World, John Cooke (his father Francis Cooke was also a passenger) and Richard Warren. Leslie A. Brown was also related indirectly to John Tilley's brother, Edward (Elizabeth Tilly's uncle) & his wife Ann Cooper Tilley both of whom also perished the first winter leaving Elizabeth an orphan at age 14. John Howland, John Tilley and his brother, Edward Tilley, Francis Cooke, and Richard Warren all signed the Mayflower Compact. Through Leslie's paternal grandmother, Poly Mary Ellis, (whose father's mother was Catherine Pearce) we can trace the family back to the Pearce family of Prudence Island, Rhode Island (descendants of John Pearce who was a mason who came to America from Wales circa 1660).
