OLYMPIA, Wash. — Melvin Everett “Mel” James, 71, passed away at his home in Olympia, Wash., on May 3, 2015, after a battle with brain cancer. Mel was born July 19, 1943, to O.R. “Cap” and Ruby Beekman James. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1961 and, on Aug. 15, 1961, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving until being honorably discharged Aug. 13, 1965. Family and friends are encouraged to attend a military graveside memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan.
