Ruby May Pontious Smith, daughter of John Henry Pontious and Bessie Arloa Bloom, was born November 11, 1913 at Norwich, Iowa, Page County and entered into her eternal home on Monday, August 31, 2015 at the Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas at the age of 101. Ruby attended school through the 8th grade in Norwich, Iowa and one year of high school in Shenandoah, Iowa. Then moved to Pawnee City, Nebraska, to live with her sister Marie Williams where she attended high school. In 1932 she was united in marriage to Cecil L. Johnson to this marriage three sons were born, Boyd L., Richard E., Buddy H. Ruby had seven brothers, and four sisters, Zetta Comer, Sadie Louise, Zetta Comer, Marie William, Irma Lucille; brothers, Russell, Mack, Jake, Leslie, Harold (Bob), George, and Howard and a half-sister Mina. Ruby married Alec M. "Mitch" Searcy in 1939, he passed away in 1964. After the death of Mitch she moved back to Shenandoah to take care of her mother and to work as a clerk for the "Corner Drug Store" in Shenandoah. On September 10, 1966, she was united in marriage to Harry Smith at St. Mary's Church in Shenandoah. After their marriage they made their home west of Imogene on the farm. Ruby was a lifetime member of American Legion, she served in the Womens Army Air Corp at Topeka, Kansas. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilary and the St. Patrick's Altar Society and St. Mary's Catholic Church Ladies Guild. She had attended Capital School of Beauty in Omaha, Nebraska. Preceding her in death was her sons, brothers and sisters and two grandchildren step daughter Janet Whitehill.
