Bio

Omaha World-Herald (NE) January 11, 1994 Ex - Horse Trainer's Rites Wednesday; J.C. Pokorny Services for James C. Pokorny, who retired in 1992 as the oldest horse trainer at Ak - Sar - Ben, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church near 48th and William Streets. Pokorny, 91, died Monday at Bergan Mercy Medical Center, said his niece, Toni Sidzyik of Omaha. He suffered a heart attack last week while recuperating from a broken hip at Mercy Care Center, Ms. Sidzyik said. Pokorny, a native Omahan who trained horses for about 40 years, was one of the oldest trainers in the United States. He and his wife, Marie, worked together at the track until Pokorny's retirement in the summer of 1992, Ms. Sidzyik said. The Pokornys, who were married 65 years, were regulars at Ak - Sar - Ben, visit ing the barns and eating breakfast at the track kitchen every morning. Pokorny told The World - Herald in 1990 that he planned to continue working "until they bury me." "I still get a kick out of it," he said. Pokorny said the love of horses ran deep in his family. His great - grandfather, who was from Bohemia, raised horses for the German army, and his grandmother married a blacksmith. Pokorny said he began working at Ak - Sar - Ben in the 1920s - working around the stables and "doing what - not." He gained experience and eventually became a trainer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Charlie Pokorny of Omaha, and sister, Ann Esgate of Renton, Wash. Contributor: MicheleH (49261183)
