Bio

From the Idaho Statesman 11 Jan 2000: Lela Evelyn Cole Mutch, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at a Boise care center after a two-month illness. Lela was born Nov. 5, 1908, at Guthrie, Okla., a daughter of Wilmer D. and Clara Nehring Cole. The family soon moved to Vernon County, Mo., where Lela started school. In 1920 the family moved to Nampa, Idaho, and later to the Riverside community. She attended Nampa Business College and worked as a public stenographer. Lela and Donald Mutch were married on Dec. 12, 1928, and lived near Lake Lowell until 1944, when they moved to Boise. They lived at Grants Pass, Ore., Rupert and Paul, Idaho, and Othello, Wash., before retiring in Boise in 1973. Lela always kept an excellent garden. She made draperies for Nadine Miller Draperies for many years. She was proud of her work that adorned many area residences and businesses. In 1958 Lela took up knitting, outfitting the entire family with sweaters, afghans, and doll clothes. Her work earned her many ribbons, including four "Best of Show" prizes at the Western Idaho Fair. As a retirement hobby, Lela and Don started collecting Fiesta dinnerware, assembling one of the most complete collections in the world. They made many new friends and traveled extensively in pursuit of new pieces. Parts of their collection are featured in Huxford's "Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta." Lela is survived by her husband of 71 years; children, Joan and Orrin McCoy of Boise, Donna and Jim Clark of Parma, and John and Catherine Mutch of Boise; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; sisters Wilma Alsup, Lucille Cox, and Bonnie Taylor; and brother, Glen Cole. Lela was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters. Lela and her family were featured in the Idaho Statesman on March 28, 1999, as part of the "On to 2000" series. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 15, at Mountain View Mausoleum Chapel, 8209 Fairview Ave., Boise. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
