Edward George Kocurek Sr . Services for Edward G. Kocurek Sr., 84, of Bryan are scheduled for Monday, February 7th at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Reverend John McCaffrey officiating. Visitation will be today from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Memorial Funeral Chapel, with a rosary service at 3:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Mr. Kocurek was born May 20, 1920 in Deanville, Texas, and shortly thereafter moved to Caldwell. In December of 1941, Ed joined the United States Navy (with his twin brother Ben) 10 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served his country during World War II. After leaving the service, Ed met his wife, Gloria, at a dance in Deanville. They married in May of 1949, and moved to Bryan to live and raise their family. They joined St. Joseph Catholic Church, where Ed became a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. Post 4692 in Bryan. Ed joined Texas A&M as an Administrator in 1966, and worked there until his retirement in 1986. The friendships Ed made during his Navy career continued throughout his life. He and Gloria attended many reunions of his USS Brookings shipmates in various locations through the United States. But the greatest loves of his life were his wife, children and grandchildren. From 1968 through 1972, he managed his children's country and western band, The Rhythm Tones, as they played in SPJST and other dance halls around the greater Brazos and Burleson county areas. His only compensation was the joy in spending time with his children and a free breakfast after each dance. Ed thoroughly enjoyed his career with Texas A&M and was a huge supporter of the Fightin' Texas Aggies. Upon retirement from A&M, he and Gloria traveled the United States, showing their Aggie spirit everywhere they went. Retirement also afforded Ed the time to follow the considerable athletic and musical achievements of his grandchildren, which gave him great joy. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Kocurek of Bryan to whom he was married for over 55 years; one son, Ed Kocurek Jr. and wife Karen of Houston; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Greg Nelson of Pearland, Deborah and Al Wetterstroem of League City and Karen and Glenn Boone of Bryan; two brothers, Ben M. Kocurek of Caldwell and Thomas A. Kocurek of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren, Amanda Black of Frisco, Ryan Landrum of San Marcos, Justin and his wife Amanda Boone of Bryan, Lauren Boone of Bryan, Nathan Boone of Bryan, Jacob Kocurek of Houston and Brandon Kocurek of Houston. Mr. Kocurek is preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Kocurek, and his sister, Georgia Russell.
