Thomas was a soldier during the Spanish-American War, serving as a Private in Co. I, 7th Regiment Missouri Volunteers. After the war, he was a brakeman for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad and was killed in a terrible train accident. ~~~ Oakland (California) Tribune, December 27, 1902: "FREIGHT TRAINS IN COLLISION. ONE MAN IS KILLED AND THREE ARE INJURED IN WRECK. ENGINES COME TOGETHER ON THE MISSOURI PACIFIC RAILROAD. Kansas City, Mo., December 27. -- A special from Paola, Kansas, to the Star says: A head-end collision occurred between freight trains on the Missouri Pacific Railroad a mile south of Dodsan at one o'clock this morning. "The dead: T.P. NORTON, brakeman, Sedalia, Mo. "The injured: WILLIAM BEDELL, engineer, badly scalded; J. SPAULDING, brakeman, head cut and gash on arm; J.W.
