Bio

Barbara Ann Phelps, the daughter of Dr. Thomas and Margaret Blazek Shonka was born December 19, 1935 in Malvern, Iowa. She died on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 19 days. Barbara was raised in Malvern, Iowa, graduating from Malvern High School in l953. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and the University of Omaha. Barbara was united in marriage to Daniel L. Phelps on June 25, 1956 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. While Dan was in the Navy, they lived in Newport, Rhode Island and Norfolk, Virginia. When Dan was discharged from the Navy, they lived two years in Jefferson, Iowa. Since 1962, Barb and Dan have lived on their farm north of Red Oak. Barbara was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, having served on the parish council, teaching catechism and numerous other church activities. She was a past Cub Scout leader and a strong supporter of the Red Oak High School Music program, having donated an organ to the program. Barbara was an avid bowler. In 1989, she was honored by being inducted into the Red Oak Women?s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Barbara enjoyed sending many birthday, anniversary and get well cards to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister; Judy Kline. Barbara is survived by her husband Daniel L. Phelps of Red Oak, IA; three sons: Mike Phelps and wife Mary of Omaha, NE; Danny Phelps and wife Irene of Red Oak, IA and Jim Phelps of Red Oak, Iowa; daughter: Sarah Phelps of Omaha, NE; 8 grandchildren: Randon, Josh, Meghan, Emily, Amber, Sam, Danny and Chloe; sister: Jeannie Alberts and husband Lavern of Denison, Iowa; other relatives and a host of friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at 10:00 A.M. At St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Red Oak Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Father Ken Gross, Celebrant Recitation of Rosary on Monday evening at 7:00 PM at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Red Oak, visitation with the family to follow. A Memorial is being established in her Barb?s name. Services entrusted to Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home.
