Bio

Obituary From The Ottumwa Courier , January 29, 2015: OTTUMWA — Dennis Ellsworth Stoher, 90, of Ottumwa, died at 6:30 a.m. January 28, 2015. He was born on July 24, 1924, in Ottumwa to Glen M. and Vinetta Curry Stoher. He married Helen M. Clark on April 16, 1950. She preceded him in death on August 16, 2001. Dennis served on the USS Richmond during World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Dennis returned from the service and started at John Morrell & Co. in the mechanical department, working there until the plant closed in 1973. He was an electrician. Dennis was an avid bowler. He started in 1946 and never quit. He was a charter member of the Iowa Senior Bowling Association and the longest continual bowler in the Iowa State Legion Bowling Tournament of 60 years. He was the original member of the Industrial League Legion Wildcat team, which he still bowled on. He has won the Men's Senior State Tournament, Ottumwa City Tournament and many league championships. He has participated in the Men's ABC National, Elks National and American Legion National tournaments. He instilled the love of bowling in both of his daughters and his grandson. Just like his father, Dennis was a lifetime member of B.P.O. Elks #347, serving on the house and trustees and was awarded "Elk of the Year." He was also a 60-year member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Denny's other great passion in life was fishing. He grew up fishing on the Des Moines River, and he always looked forward to the water getting soft in the spring so he could take the boat out. He never tired of going and gave his whole family the love of the outdoors. Although he never caught the big one, he never tired of telling the story and sharing the picture of Helen's. Rathbun won't be the same for his family without him. Surviving are his two daughters, Marilyn (John) Schachel of Rockwell, Iowa, and Nancy (Kenneth) Peterson of Ottumwa; his beloved grandchildren, Madalyne and Dennis Rutledge; his niece, Patty Hurley and nephew, Mike Stoher of Stanton, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Chester Stoher. Funeral services and an Elks memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. David Klanderman officiating the funeral service. Honorary pallbearers are John Schachel, Dennis Rutledge, Michael Muldoon, Carl Wright, John Malone and Mike Stoher. Visitation will be open from 11 a.m. Saturday until 5 p.m. Saturday. Visitation with the family present will be from noon Sunday until the time of the services. Cremation will follow the services. Inurnment with military services will be in Shaul Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to B.P.O. Elks Scholarship Fund.
