Bio

Bettye Jean Bassham Cornwell, 86, former resident of Maple Court, died Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Lakeshore The Meadows in Nashville. Burial in Polk Memorial Gardens. Born and reared in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of the late Henry Bassham and Nannie Frizzell Bassham and a 1947 graduate of Haylong High School. She married Ernest Howard Cornwell on November 27, 1947. For 31 years, they owned and operated Norton & Steely Wholesale Grocery. Mr. Cornwell died October 1, 1990. She was very active in the lives of her children and their activities, including work with the PTA and serving as Band Mother. She loved to travel, and enjoyed sewing, collecting antiques, and “socializing.” Mrs. Cornwell was a devoted member of Graymere Church of Christ and participated in many of the churches programs and projects. She was a member of the Wendell Robinson Sunday School Class and made several mission trips with other church members. Survivors include her son, Randy (Nancy) Cornwell of Nashville; sister, Joyce (David) Hughes of Mt. Pleasant; brothers, Pete (Judy) Bassham of Niceville, Florida, Jimmy Bassham of Columbia, Tommy (Loretta) Bassham of Columbia, and David (Vicki) Bassham of Columbia. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Faye Cornwell Hardison; sisters, Sue Plew and Jane Peden; and brother, Charles Bassham. They have a daughter Betty Jean, f, 11m. 1940 Census, taken 15 Apr 1940, has Henry Bassham, 32, operator at phosphate plant, married to Nannie, 31, living in 6th Civil District, Maury County, TN. Children are: Betty Jean, f, 10; Martha Sue, f, 8; William Earnest, m, 6; Mary Jane, f, 5; Jimmy Howard, m, 2; and Charles Douglas, m, 5m. Tennessee Marriage Records have Ernest Howard Cornwell, 23, born 11 Apr 1925, from Columbia, Maury County, TN, and Bettye Jean Bassham, 18, born 11 May 1929, from Mount Pleasant, Maury County, TN, married on 27 Nov 1947 in Maury County. Name of next of kin for bride is mother Nannie Bassham. All legal signatures for bride are signed "Mrs Henry Bassham by Bettye".
