Retired Master Sgt. Larry T. Abrell, U.S.A.F., 72, formerly of New Castle, residing in Anchorage, Alaska, passed away Wednesday at his residence. He was born Sept. 19, 1939 in New Castle, IN, a son of the late Homer and Frances Abrell. He was a 1957 graduate of New Castle High School. He was retired as a Master SGt. with the U.S. Air Force after 26 years of service. He was a recipient of many military awards and recognitions including the 5th highest award from the Air Force--the Distinguished Flying Cross. He served in Viet Nam, Korean, Greece, Italy, and Thailand, to mention only a few duty assignments. Sgt. Abrell's military occupation specialty was Electronic Security Specialist. His family issued the following statement: Larry Abrell was a hero to his family and his country. He was a sports fan, and fisherman, and lived his life exactly the way he wanted to. A avid sports fan, his favorite teams to follow were the New Castle Trojans, I.U. basketball, Dallas Cowboys Football, Chicago Cubs Baseball, Boston Celtics Basketball, Indy Auto Racing and NASCAR Auto Racing. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Macer-Hall Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Tom McGilliard officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by a contingency from the U.S. Air Force, American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
