Charles was born in Indiana to farmers William and Barbara. His older siblings were Margaret Elizabeth (1859–1945), George A "Joe" (1860–), William Alexander Jr. (1862–1916), Henry John (1864–1956), Mary Anna (1865–1910), Andrew Aaron (1866–1945), Annie Laura (1869– ), and Theresa Agnes (1870–). The family later moved from Indiana to farm in Grant, Dawson County, Nebraska. In Nebraska he married Elizabeth “Bessie” Fox, and they had four children, two whom survived: Frank Bernard (1912–2002), Mary (1913–1914), Charles Joseph (1916–1993), and Catherine (1918–1926). Sadly, his wife died in 1918, and although he was able to keep his son’s with him for a short time, but eventually each of the children went to live with foster parents. He took a farm laborer jobs in various states the rest of his life. He joined his oldest son Frank in Memphis in his later days until his death in 1962.
