Daughter of George M. & Ann Lauman. Monday forenoon John Buchanan shot and killed Mrs. Grace Chapman and then took his own life. The tragedy which shocked this community occurred at the home of Forrest Buchanan, a brother of John Buchanan, and with whom the latter was making his home. Mrs. Chapman is Mrs. Forrest Buchanan's mother and she too had been making her home there. (excerpt from Albion Weekly News - May 6, 1920) The funeral of Mrs. Grace E. Chapman, one of the victims of the shooting tragedy last week, was held from the Congregational church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. B. J. Trickey, and interment made in Rose Hill cemetery. Mrs. Grace E. Chapman was born in Louisville, Kentucky, December 30, 1842. At the age of five she moved with her parents to Ohio, where she grew to womanhood. At the age of twenty-three she was united in marriage to William Chapman. To this union were born four daughters, Blanche the oldest died in infancy. The others, Mrs. Luella Hinkle, of Wisconsin; Mrs. Anna Clipston, of Loup City and Mrs. Forrest Buchanan, of Albion remain to mourn the loss of their mother. The Chapman family came to Albion in 1884 and September 25, 1889, Mr. Chapman departed this life. For the past twenty years Mrs. Chapman has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Forrest Buchanan. She was a member of the Congregational church of this city, having united with that organization about thirty years ago. She was a faithful mother and was loved and respected by a large circle of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Will Clipston of Loup City and Mrs. Hinkle of Wisconsin were here for the funeral.
