Confederate widow Mary Ophelia Boyce was born in April of 1845 at Bastrop, Texas. She was born to Samuel Stone and Mary Ann Chunn both of Hannibal, Missouri. Mary Stone married Confederate veteran William Boyce who served in Darnell's Regiment, 18th Texas Cavalry and was discharged on August 10, 1864. Boyce served in Arkansas with the 18th and eventually at the Confederate defeat at the battle of Arkansas Bend in 1863. He was captured after the battle and interred in Camp Douglas, Illinois. He was paroled in Virginia and spent the rest of the War in a hospital. He was discharged on medical reasons. Mary Boyce stated in her Confederate Woman's Home application that during the Civil War, she "knitted and spun for soldiers."
