Daily Post Athenian June 16, 2015 Mr. James William "Joe" Crabtree, 86, of Athens, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at his residence. A native of Calico Rock, Ark., and a resident of Athens for most of his life, he was a son of the late William Jacob and Nettie Whitaker Crabtree. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gene McDaniel; two brothers, William Otis Crabtree and the Rev. Glenn Lee Crabtree; and two brothers-in-law, the Rev. Ralph Sliger and James "Jim" Ratledge. He was the owner of ABC Fire Equipment Company and Creech Fire Equipment Company. He worked for Spurling Fire Alarm Company before starting his own business. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lavonne Wallace Crabtree of Athens; two daughters, Debbie Vanessa McDaniel of Ft. Payne, Ala., and Dianne Vonette Crabtree of Athens; three sons and daughters-in-law, William Reed "Butch" and Diana Crabtree and Ricky Joe and Mona Crabtree, all of Niota, and David Ross and Wendy Crabtree of Martin, Ga.; two sisters, Maudie Ratledge and Barbara Sliger, both of Athens; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Wayne and Rosezella Crabtree and Shirley Crabtree, all of Athens; 10 grandchildren, James R. Crabtree, Christopher Crabtree, Greg Crabtree, Shaylon Corbitt, Megan McDaniel, Angela Long, David Crabtree Jr., Amber Crabtree, Candace Bonds, and Amy Jacques; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Mark Sliger officiating. Active pallbearers will be James R. Crabtree, Christopher Crabtree, Gregory Crabtree, Matthew Crabtree, David Crabtree Jr., and David Crabtree Sr. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Tri-County Center, 3030 Lee Highway, Athens, TN 37303. Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of arrangements.
