Son of Olin Benjamin Gill and Rose Agnes Harrison. One of 7 children, born in Kentucky, raised in Alabama. James married Betty Carol Scoggins on 5 December 1947. They moved to Dallas, where was a surveyor. The couple had a son: Melvin Lamar Gill, born in 1951 Thanks to Joan Gill
