Bio
Mary Hanna's maiden name of "Cassidy" comes from the 1796 Bourbon County, Kentucky, marriage record of Mary Cassidy to Samuel Hanna , also buried in this cemetery. The spelling is also found as "Cassiday" in some records, including in one son's middle name and the article "The Stout-Hanna-Whyte Families" by Dan E. Westphal (Flashback, August 1984, pages 16-22, Washington County Historical Society). Per the above article, a likely candidate for Mary's father is William Cassidy of Bourbon County. Some feel that she must be related to Jeremiah Cassidy of Washington County, son of Daniel of Nicholas County, since she named a son "Jeremiah Cassidy Hanna," their grandchildren intermarried, and she and Samuel lived in Nicholas County in 1800. Daniel does refer to a daughter Mary in his will, but it is currently unknown what became of her. Not enough is known of Daniel's age (other than he was born before 1865) to say whether he could be Mary's father. Still, he might be an uncle and Jeremiah a cousin, etc. Westphal lists the following children for Mary and Samuel: Joseph B., James, Cynthia Ann (Williams), Jesse Pearce, Samuel, Ebenezer, Margaret (Stout), Mary (Shepherd), and Jeremiah Cassidy. Mary's birth year is believed to be around 1775-1780, based on the presence of an older woman in son Jeremiah Cassiday Hanna's household in the 1840 census. Her daughter Margaret stated in the 1880 census that Mary was born in Kentucky and Samuel in Pennsylvania, but Mary's son Jesse said in that census that both parents were born in Pennsylvania. (It may or may not be meaningful that Jeremiah Cassidy said he was born in Pennsylvania.) Her middle initial of "B" on the headstone is a source of some confusion. John Louis Akard (user qashqai on this site) solved it - this isn't her headstone. It's the headstone of her daughter-in-law who married her son J.C. Hanna. (See that memorial for a larger photo that makes this clear.) Mary is believed to have died after 1840 (census noted above) and before 1850 (not found in that or any later census). Some trees offer 1844 for a birth date, but the source for this is unknown and may be an approximation or a before/after date.
