Margaret Hanna was probably born in Floyd County, Kentucky, where her parents were enumerated in the 1810 and 1820 census, and where she married Jonathan Stout in 1825. Along with many other Floyd County families, the couple soon found themselves in Vermilion County, Illinois, circa 1828. Their daughters Elizabeth, Cynthia, and Celia all were born in Illinois. The couple seems to have come to Washington County, Arkansas, circa 1833 with - again - many other Floyd County families. However, Margaret's daughter Elizabeth mentioned in her pension application that the family was in Tennessee for 1837. Whatever the reason for this, the Margaret and her brood were back in Washington County by 1840 and for every census year after that. Interestingly, Margaret and Jonathan had five daughters in a row followed by six sons. The rest of the couple's children (born in Arkansas) were Julian A. (a daughter), Keziah Jane, Samuel J., David S., John A., William, Jeremiah H, and James M. According to "The Stout-Hanna-Whyte Families" by Dan E. Westphal, Margaret was "big, heavy-set woman of Irish descent." A photo of Margaret and husband Jonathan can be easily found on popular genealogy sites.
