Thanks to contributor #48796369 Gorden "Dean" Walkup, 69, of North Loup died Monday, March 18, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in North Loup. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in North Loup with military honors provided by Ralph R. Rich Post 285. There will be no visitation. His body was cremated. Mr. Walkup was born Nov. 30, 1932, at North Loup to Carl and Elma (Van Horn) Walkup. He was educated in North Loup, graduating in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He married Joyce Hosch on Nov. 28, 1952, in Council Bluffs. He was a butcher working in various markets before owning his own butcher shop in Simi Valley, Calif. He sold the butcher shop and returned to North Loup to retire in 1980. His wife died Feb. 16, 1987. He married Connie (Eberhart) Layer on May 14, 1988. The couple lived in North Loup. His wife died Dec. 20, 1997. He was a member of VFW and Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed puzzles, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Patrica Walkup of Scotia, Sue Walkup of Ord and Joy and Rick Kronholm of Ozarks, Mo.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gregory and Karen Walkup of Oxnard, Calif., and Carl Walkup; a stepson, Bobby Layer of New Mexico; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Julie and Keith Davis and Sharon and Kenny Miles, all of Kansas; six grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Vicki Rowbal of North Loup. He was preceded in death by his wives, a sister, Helen J. Potomic, and a brother, Lauren Walkup. The Grand Island Independent, Mar. 21, 2002
