Bio

Glade Walker Gillman 1921 - 2015 VETERAN Early Life: Glade was born on March 1, 1921, in Orem, Utah, the seventh of ten children, to James William and Estella Walker Gillman. He was raised in Orem where his family's large farm required the commitment of all ten children and taught them the true meaning of work. A great deal of responsibility was placed upon Glade and his siblings considering his father was often away from home serving as the mayor of Orem for 18 years and as a Utah County Commissioner for ten years. Life's Work | Service | Interests: On October 1, 1942, Glade married the love of his life, Betty Cameron, shortly before being drafted into the United States Coast Guard. He was sent to California and sweet Betty followed. Upon his honorable discharge from the military the following June, he returned to work on the farm that he later purchased with his brothers, Dean and John. Glade enjoyed farming for many years and along with his brother, Dean, was awarded the Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year Award. Glade followed in his father's footsteps by serving in many positions of leadership. He served on the Metropolitan Water Board, as chair of the Utah Apple Marketing Board, president of the Utah Farm Labor Association, president of the State Horticulture Board, vice-president of the Utah County Farm Bureau, and on the State Farm Bureau. As an active member of his ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Glsfr served in the Sunday School presidency, as an assistant to the executive secretary, and a building facilitator. Though he believed when he turned 80, that he would be put out to pasture, he was called to be the ward greeter and enjoyed this calling. Glade was an avid supporter of BYU and traveled on many international trips with the Cougar Club. He enjoyed following BYU sports and attending social events. Glade Walker Gillman passed away on May 9, 2015. He was 94.
