Canby resident Alice Mildred Berkey, age 81, went to be with her Lord and Savior April 7, 2015. She was born in Alliance, Neb., Dec. 23, 1933 to Louis and Julia Foltyn. Her family, including her brother Gene and sister Pat, moved to Woodburn when she was a child. A neighbor girl began inviting her to church and she became a devoted believer at a young age. She would later share that faith with her children and grandchildren, involving them in her church. Alice graduated from Woodburn High School in 1952 and married Richard Berkey March 14, 1953. They lived in Hubbard and became parents of four children: Denise Laurel, Pamela Jean, Douglas Gene and Aaron Matthew. In 1962 they bought a farm in Aurora and moved their family to a place in the country. Alice was a stay-at-home mom until the kids were in secondary school. She always loved working with children and went on to work as a cook in the school cafeteria at North Marion. Alice was always the mom that transported the kids to football games, field trips and band trips. She came to be known around school as “Big Al” with all the kids. After she retired she began serving in her church, most recently with the Calvary Women’s Missionary Society, where she formed many friendships, shared many stories and laughter, always feeling so blessed by their fellowship together. She and Richard began traveling, taking fishing trips in their fifth-wheel with their lifelong friends. Grandma Berkey loved and enjoyed her grandchildren: Allison, Mandi, Robert, Marisa, Kelsey, Callan, Casey and her eight great-grandchildren. She came to many sporting events, concerts and Grandparents Days at school over the years, delighting in their every achievement. There was never a more devoted grandmother and friend. Waiting for her in heaven are her daughter Denise Laurel, mother Julia, father Louis, sister Patricia, many friends and extended family. A time of remembrance will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. April 11, 2015 at Calvary Mennonite Church in Aurora, in the gymnasium. A private burial for immediate family only will be at Zion Mennonite Cemetery in Hubbard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Women’s Missionary Society c/o Calvary Mennonite Church, Aurora, OR 97002. Arrangements entrusted to Simon-Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Woodburn.
