Daughter of Peter & Margaret "Maggie" (Smetter) Martin. Married to Lester Stutzman ∼ Velma Irene Stutzman, of Milford, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at Crestview Care Center in Milford at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 27 days. She was born November 13, 1911, the second child born to Peter and Margaret "Maggie" (Smetter) Martin. As a young girl, Velma attended Goehner Public School and later attended and graduated from Flowing Well Country School near Beaver Crossing. Velma was baptized at West Fairview Mennonite Church where she accepted Christ as her personal savior and later became a member of Bellwood Mennonite Church in Milford. During a snowstorm on February 11, 1932, Velma was united in marriage to Lester Stutzman at her parents home. To this union four children, Richard, Dorothy, Donald and an infant son, were born. Together they made their home on a farm near Beaver Crossing where Lester farmed until the 1960's. Velma was an excellent hostess and was a constant helper with the farm chores throughout their life. While they lived east of Beaver Crossing, Velma often opened her home to anyone who was visiting in the area. An excellent cook, she could always find and fix extra food for her guests. Her family especially remembers her roast beef and doughnuts. During the winter months, in her spare time, Velma enjoyed quilting and making rag rugs. A loving mother and caregiver, she never had a cross word for anyone. In her later years she often participated in the sewing group at the church. They then moved to Goehner and eventually to Milford in 1999 where she and Lester made their home at Linden Village. Velma is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Thelma Stutzman, Beaver Crossing, daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Paul Stutzman, Wood River, daughters-in-law, Judy Stutzman, Beaver Crossing, 10 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Orvin Good, Columbia, SC, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
