Governor of Utah. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 13th Governor of the State of Utah from 1985 until 1993. He served with the United States Navy during the Korean War and upon his return home, he enrolled at Brigham Young University and later the University of Utah. He made a name for himself in the construction industry and launched his career in the political arena, when he was elected to and served in the Utah State Legislature from 1974 until 1984. During his tenure as governor, he faced challenging economic times and a state who's land was greatly devastated by years of heavy, flooding rains. As a result, he provided funding to construct a pump system to help alleviate the problem. He focused on providing funding for the state's educational programs and reached out to the international community to provide trade agreements to boost the state's economy. His older brother William Grant Bangerter was a high-ranking official within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He died of complications from a stroke.
