Marie R. Wright, 92, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 15, 2004, in St. Mary’s Regional Health Center at Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Marie Rose Krier was born June 1, 1911, in Redwood County, southern Minnesota, to John and Sophia (Kahnke) Krier. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1926 and received a two year Standard Certificate from Moorhead Teacher’s College in 1928. Marie taught for two years in Goodridge, Minnesota, and then moved to Callaway, Minnesota, to continue teaching. The following year she was hired as the principal. Marie received her BS Degree from St. Cloud Teacher’s College in June of 1934. She then taught for two years in Morton, Minnesota, and one-half year in Olivia, Minnesota. During the summers she worked at the Pettibone Lodge Store at Shoreham and the Edgewater Beach resort, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. It was there she met her future husband. Marie and Frederick Holmes Wright were married on January 4, 1937, and made their home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She and her husband owned the Hotel Minnesota Company, which included among other properties, the Graystone Hotel, Detroit Lakes; the Detroit Lakes Realty Company, which owned the Edgewater Beach Resort; and the Wright Realty Company, which owned residential, forest, and farm/ranch properties in both Minnesota and California. Two years after her husband’s death in 1963, Marie went back to teaching and taught at both the Junior and Senior High School at Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. She retired in 1976. Since retiring, she became active in politics and was the Becker County Chairman of the Republican Party from 1985-1987. Marie was on the Board of Directors at the Becker County Historical Society, Treasurer and President of the Senior Citizens Nutritional Center, Treasurer and Vice President of the Detroit Lakes area Retired Educators, and Captain of St. Mary’s Circle at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. In 1994, Marie was awarded the Republican Party’s Frances Erickson Award for distinguished service in the Seventh Congressional District. She is survived by a son, Fred (Palma), Moorhead, Minnesota; two sisters, Catherine Krier, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; Margaret Tembrock, Ogema, Minnesota; one brother, John Krier, Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren, Kirsten (Chad) Frisell, Queen Creek, Arizona; Traci Wright, Moorhead, Minnesota; and Justin (Jackie) Wright, Crystal Lake, Illinois. There are also three great grandchildren, Chase, Riley, and Allie. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one infant sister. Funeral: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 11:00 AM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Visitation: Monday, January 19, 2004, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes from 1:30-2:30 PM and at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes from 4:30-7:30 PM.
