Bio

Longtime Anchorage resident, Mr. John Albert Krier, 92, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Horizon House Assisted Living Home in Anchorage. Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Holy Family Cathedral Church in Anchorage. Father Paul will officiate. An additional mass and inurnment service will be held in Callaway, MN at the Church of the Assumption in July of 2013. John was born May 17, 1920 to John Peter Krier, Sr. and Sophia (Kahnke) in Callaway, MN. John first worked on his father's farm pursuing farming until his health no longer allowed it. He ventured to Florida and Arizona where he started his career in the hotel industry. He also acquired his private pilot's license while in Tucson, AZ. He returned to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota where he managed, along with his sister (Marie Wright and her husband, Fred Wright) the Graystone Hotel and the Edgewater Beach Resort. He also owned Service Cleaners in Detroit Lakes, MN. John served as President of Viking Land USA in North Central MN, promoting tourism for the state. John was on the staff of the Kahler Corporation FM Hotel in Moorhead, MN for several years. He pursued his interest in the insurance industry as an insurance agent and stock broker for MONY (Mutual of New York) for many years. When John moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1980, he began a new career in real estate with his passion for sales, working well into his late eighties. John married Mary Clara Jager on June 3, 1949 in Detroit Lakes, MN. In 1953 John bought his father's farm in Callaway, MN, where he and Mary raised their 13 children. John and Mary enjoyed outdoor activities with their children including camping, fishing and hunting. Many a weekend was spent enjoying summers at their family owned cottage on Little Pelican Lake. Dad was an incredible story teller with his wonderful voice and detailed memory. He was an intelligent, well read, knowledgeable man. His vocabulary was outstanding as he had a love for words and learned a new one nearly everyday. He also loved to play cards and tell jokes, having a wonderful sense of humor. Everyone who knew Dad, knew him with a cigar in his hand and many a sibling during a photo shoot would get the cigar in their face as Dad would try to jokingly put the cigar in their mouth. One of the beautiful gifts Dad gave to us were the hundreds of photos in the form of slides that we continue to share and remember. Dad never complained about the things in his life because he loved life. Our family was blessed to have John (Pete), Dad's eldest son, care for him in his home over the last couple of years. In addition, four of his other sons who lived nearby were able to assist in his care. Dad will be deeply missed by all his children! John was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, his wife, Mary and his daughters, Suzi and Josie. He is survived by his sons, John Peter Krier II of Anchorage, AK, Thomas (Judy) Krier of Chugiak, AK, Robert & Daniel Krier both of Anchorage, AK, Fred (Cheryl) Krier of Copper Center, AK and Nick Krier of Vadnais Heights, MN; daughters, Mary Kihl of Mesa, AZ, Bette (Jerry) Hultstrand of Elgin, IL, Kathy (Jeff) SeGraves of Reno, NV, Sophia Gill of Queen Creek, AZ and Jenny Krier of Cottonwood, AZ; plus nineteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Arrangements were cared for by the Anchorage Funeral Home & Crematory.
