Bio

Merle Bernhardt, 73, of Loveland passed away on August 26, 2006 after a nine month valiant fight against Leukemia. He was born to Victor and Esther (Karbs) Bernhardt on July 3, 1933 in Greeley, CO. He graduated from College High School in Greeley in 1951. He married Betty Charvonia in 1954 in Greeley. They later divorced. He married Connie George on September 1, 1966 in Denver, CO. They would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this Friday. They lived in Denver for 10 years and Broomfield for 13 years before relocating to Loveland in 1989. Merle served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean War. He was a town marshal in Windsor in the mid 1950's, then a State Patrol Officer for 5 years. In 1967, he went to work for Park Oil Company (Fina) as a supervisor until 1974. In 1974 he purchased his first convenience store in Boulder. He subsequently owned stores in Greeley, Lyons, Boulder and Niwot. He retired in 1993. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Merle was known for his beautiful lawn, garden, and his dogs, Penny and Cheri. He and Connie enjoyed traveling around the country, including two trips to Alaska and also enjoyed their trips to Blackhawk. He is survived by his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law, three daughters, step-brother and wife, step-sister and husband, sister-in-law, seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren [survivors names omitted] He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Don and Clyde Bernhardt; one step-brother, Gerald Arnold; one grandson, Cory Bernhardt; stepmother, Weltha Bernhardt and his father-in-law, Marion George and mother-in-law Marie George. A memorial service will be held at Allnutt Hunter Chapel Thursday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment at Loveland Burial Park. A reception in the Allnutt Reception Center will follow the inurnment.
