Betty Garben Mason, 90, a lifelong resident, died in her home on the ranch in Green Valley on Monday, March 23, 2015. Born on Sept. 26, 1924, to Arthur and Elaine Garben, she lived in Suisun, Fairfield and Green Valley all her life. She attended Crystal Elementary and graduated, one of the four valedictorians at Armijo High School, class of 1942. Pearl Harbor was bombed in Dec. of that year and life for everyone changed dramatically. Betty was fortunate and she was able to continue her studies at UC Berkeley, graduating with a major in journalism. While attending Berkeley, the San Francisco Chronicle often enlisted journalism students to serve as pages when visiting dignitaries were attending conferences in the city. She felt honored to have been called upon several times. Her proudest moment while serving as a page was having the privilege of meeting Neville Chamberlain, former Prime Minister of Britain, and then an important member of Winston Churchill's war cabinet. Soon after graduating from Berkeley, Betty's high school sweetheart, Roy Mason, returned from serving in the war and they were married in Suisun on June 8, 1947. Roy was a rancher in Suisun and Green Valley and Betty soon took on the role of a rancher's wife, helping however she could on the ranch while seeing to the comfort and care of her hard working husband. They were true stewards of the land passed down to them and their legacy continues with the family's fifth generation continuing the ranching tradition in their footsteps. Betty and Roy had two children, Mark and Sarah. Once they started school the principal of Green Valley School approached Betty and asked her if she would substitute teach for the school district. She agreed and taught elementary school as a substitute teacher for several years until the school district asked if she would be interested in participating in a new program, teaching illiterate adults to read and write. Those few years she spent teaching and becoming friends with her adult students were probably the most gratifying of her teaching career. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah and son-in-law, Frank Lindemann; two grandchildren, Curt Lindemann and Jennifer King (Kevin); five great-grandchildren, Clayton, Tyler and Charley Lindemann, Aubrey and Payton King; and her beloved in-home caregiver, "Pa". She was preceded in death by her son, Mark in 1967; and her husband of 66 years, Roy in 2013. Services for Betty will be private. The family will honor her wishes by scattering her ashes on the ranch in the meadow where the wild irises grow. Memorial contributions in her memory are preferred to Grace Episcopal Church, 1405 Kentucky St., Fairfield, CA. 94533 or to the UC Regents/Fine Arts Collection, c/o Kathryn Wayne, Curator, Art History/Classics Library, 308 Doe, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 and checks made payable to the UC Regents / Fine Arts Collection.
